General information
In 2000, cousins
Henk Zoetelief and Jan-Willem Bakker decided to devote themselves to sheep
breeding. In the autumn of the same year the opportunity presented itself
to buy a flock of pedigree Texel sheep (53 ewes, 1 ram lamb) from Jan
Engel (breeders number 2745) of Mijdrecht. The combination Bakker-Zoetelief
is registered with breeders number 5700.
With his father Henk
runs a farm, "De Arend", in nature reserve Waal en Burg. In addition to
a herd of dairy cattle, a flock of about 50 sheep roams "De Arend". Jan-Willem
is the son of a sheep farmer and partner in sheep farm "De Waddel". About
550 sheep are kept on this farm and part of the flock is milked. This
milk is made into cheese on the farm.
Both men had long been
planning to make their flocks free of Maedi-Visna, and in the autumn of
2000, Henk sold all his sheep on "De Arend" to make room for Jan Engel's
flock. In the future, this flock will be supplemented with animals they
breed themselves. For the past thirty years, breeding has consistently
focused on growth rate, fertility and milk production.
To this end, 28 of the best Texel ewes have been entered into the auxiliary
herdbook at the start of 2001. These ewes have produced lambs in the spring
of 2002, so now we have H75 lambs (75% herdbook).

The breeding
Vitality, growth rate, fertility and milk production are the key
words which sum up the focus of the breeding. Henk and Jan-Willem are great
fanciers of Texel sheep.
The flock of ewes bought from Engel was produced by rams with high indices
for growth and litter size. The rams were always born from very vigorous
ewes with good milk production. The average litter size index of the
flock is as high as 114, the average growth index is 106.
| They
have joined the weighing programme and with which they have achieved
very good results. Last year, a ram (pictured right) received a growth
index of 135 with a reliability of 75%. This ram, bred in England
and of the French type, has a muscle thickness of 34 mm on his loins. |

The 115 breeding
ewes (including forty one-year-old ewes) have been tupped by nine different
rams last autumn. Over half the flock has been tupped by an ARR/ARR ram.
Below, you will find some additional information about the rams that were
used.
